Ah - I always feel a bit shy about starting a 'Me' thread until I've been around for a couple of days and made a few decent posts. I hate putting a bunch of people in a position where they've all said, "Hello, Hi, Welcome" - and then I do the dirty on them by mysteriously disappearing.

eh, that is ok actually. that happens lots of times and i have never minded. the same with lurkers! i love lurkers. one day they might post, who knows. and if we did not respond to all of the greetings, think what some new visitor might think, that we were not welcoming of new people. you want to know the truth? most of the people who greet others here are regs of the board who just do it themselves. i never asked them too. why do they do it? because we really like new people.
btw, i think it's totally cool to see someone who likes vox populi. that is one of my favorite forums (lol, they all are!!), but it is the most thoughtful and challenging forum. we are not tremendous debators or anything, but it is good to stretch the mind. that forum has people from age 12 to 50 posting in it. i kid you not. sorry, i ramble. hehe. i do that a lot. -uma |

I still feel bad about a board I tried joining a few weeks ago - I did the whole "Here I am" thing, and logged a number of fairly long posts, but the response was almost nil so I eventually left. Because I have a board of my own I put myself in that maintainer's place, thinking that it must be a bit crap to have someone turn up, post repeatedly and then vanish.
You have a very busy board here, which is great. My own board has a dedicated core body of posters, but it's a small core, and sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be a livelier place if we had more. Still: we work with what we've got. They're all good people. Can't complain. |

hmmm...i have people turn up here, post some long things and interact, then leave. there was upuat who was very interesting to talk to matter of fact, but he vanished. however i think he is over at deacon sharps where the conversation is not so frivolous.
usually i get to know someone well enough that if they leave i pretty much know why and where they have gone to and some drop by again. this is a message board. it is like a street cafe where you get involved in conversation, amble off and get distracted by other places. or it is like that cafe with it's regular patrons and you find you stop by quite often. it's all good.so you got basically "nil" response at that other board? well then putting yourself in that board maintainer's place you will see not that "it must be a bit crap to have someone turn up, post repeatedly and then vanish", but simply that care was not being taken to pay attention to the things that visitors contribute. do you understand what i am saying? moving on. sure, this is a somewhat busy board for the most part. that busyness is deceptive though, don't kid yourself. there is a core here too, of about 5-6, very prolific posters. then there are a few visitors who post 1, 2, or 3 posts only. any board is livelier with more people, but how do you get them is the question. for example, your board is a RP board. so you have a very narrow window of people with an interest in that. there are...hmm...2 maybe RP'ers here and each has their own board and they are looking for members too. i am glad that you have some friends who are dedicated to your RP and your board. |

oh, i see what you mean. well, sometimes it is hard to keep a convo going. if you are lucky and it doesnt seem to be going anywhere, then maybe you can find a twist in it. sometimes i may leave off a convo and someone else picks it up. the ones in Vox are challenging to reply to, so i dont get to them everyday (during the week when i am working). but i try at least every other day. anyhow, boards are hard things, i say that all the time (forgive me if i already said it, it is like a mantra).
and Alyyl, that's a lot of fun to do, i have done that and ended up at some very nice, or some very strange boards. there is also a board hop here too btw if you like to surf around.  |

Boards are definitely hard things. The general conversation area of my board will go for ages with only a dribble of posts and then suddenly one topic will catch everyone's interest and half a million lurkers will come out of the woodwork. Then everything will subside and only the faint creaking of a cricket will punctuate the utter silence. That, and the sound of me worrying, "Have I driven everybody away? Is this place too passive? Too boring? Too rarified? Too underadvertised?" Tick, tick, hum, hum goes my brain, revolving around this one concern.
I find it a lot easier to post on other peoples' boards. On my own I'm always aware that I should Set A Good Example and encourage people to be good to one another. I make a decidedly stiff role model, I'm afraid. (I've rather hijacked this thread onto another topic, haven't I? I can stop if requested, or veer off somewhere else.) |

Gov, people talk to me in the oddest places here, there is no problem at all. heh, i used to have a forum just for myself, so people could talk to me...but no one ever visited. i just closed it. now i talk whereever the conversation happens to be. and i talk as long as the person wants to talk.
there is a board thread around here i think in Dire Abode. somone said "my board is dying". the conversation has gone on for pages, people talking about them, what to do. see, but the one thing you cant do is let it reflect back on you. i think in some way....the board is the owner. the board and the owner go hand in hand. in some respect they are each other. that is why it hits us so hard when things dont go quite right, when things slow down. is it myself? what am i doing wrong? am i...not interesting enough? i have felt all of these things. here is the thread. i dont know, maybe it wont apply, but you will see so many people with the same concerns as you. the thread is old, but timely as this is an ongoing concern. if you want to post in it, go ahead. if you want to return here to talk, that is fine. if you have done with talking, dont feel like i expect you to carry on talking about this. i am trying to assure you that whatever you do is good with me. pub94.ezboard.com/fthegat...=208.topic |
