Wow. Looks like we all already have accounts on Yuku. And you don't have to pay for anything. (Yet.) And it's glitchy and looks like a less ugly cross of Ezboard and Myspace. (Now there's a scary thought.)

Hehe!! All babies are cute!
 And WF's nephew will be the cutest of them all.  And yeah, it sucks to be a newbie so we will make it so no one feels that way. I have made a guild at Gaia for testing purposes. So I will issue invites to anyone who PM's me and we can try it out. It's a good thing to try it out now and then if we hate it I can maybe try another option. This does not mean I have completely given up on moving the board, I may move it anyhow if I can. Just that we are trying out an option.

Nothing wrong with these independent board-types, except for the fact that we have to go through the hassle of hosting. And Uma is not proficient in such things. And that it would suck to go through all that just to find out that we don't really need a whole board anymore.

I know some of you don't want to go. But if you would just try to make an acct, contact me there and I will invite you into the guild, then you can see if you like it. It's very easy. I love phpbb's Masa. I wish I knew php. I wish I was adept at putting a board on my server (if I had more room). We are limited to 300mb of space though. sublunary.com was only meant to be a repository for images for us all. That means finding a board out there, a platform out there, like ezboard, so I don't have to host it. They are talking in the ezboard help forums that there is still a while to go before we have to move. But I don't know what they mean by quite a while. A few months?

H&I, though, is more of a group of people than a message board.
But anyway, I'm going to summarize our options to make sure that I understand what's going on. Gaia: Guild already made, but not customizable (no purple!) and many people simply don't like it. Yuku: By far the easiest to set up, because it seems that you can move the entire board there if you have gold and all EzBoard accounts are automatically Yuku accounts. However, it seems a bit fishy because it's made by the kind folks who brought you EzBoard. Board on sublunary: It would be nice because we could do whatever we want with it, but lack of technical expertise, limitations of the site, and concerns over how active it will be make this choice a bit implausable. Anything else? |

She likes Gaia, and she loves the Gates, and it'd be easy to put the two together (...if only there was purple, like Nick said...). The only other option is if we knew someone who already has a server and can just host a board for us, and even do the bulk of the set up (someone like a Lun). |

I've set up phpBB and vBulletin before on my server, but both of those are shitty. vBulletin is bloated to hell and back and phpBB looks like ass while it has some retarded unpatched security vulnerabilities too. There are other kinds available and they are all reasonably easy to setup if you know everything you need about your server.. but also usually suck.

I know nothing about my server. I can ftp to it and that is all. I understand there is a control panel which I have looked at but that is all I did. God only knows what would happen if I tried to use the CP.
I understand that proboards are fairly easy. I think Trickyvikki moved to a proboard and it was very easy for her to do and the cost was quite low. I will go and look at that option again. Nick you have the right of it with your summary. I am sorry about Gaia's flood control. You can see that it is very necessary though at a board like that. There is 45 seconds between each post there. I will look at proboards later. I think they might have a platform I can use instead of my own host.

Well basically you'd need to know:
SQL server IP/Hostname SQL server Port SQL User Name SQL Password SQL Table(I think it is called table) Name to setup a phpBB or vBulletin. That's all! Usually tho port isn't needed and neither is IP cuz it's "localhost"... Guess you'd also need to know the servers SMTP address to use any e-mail based features. It's a lot of hassle IMO. When Place of Magic was a vBulletin I didn't have the mail based features enabled at all cuz they'd error without a SMTP server. Guess this info is useless! |
